📜 History

Construction of the church began in 1597 and was completed in 1602. It was part of a large Augustinian complex that included a convent and several other buildings. At the time, it was one of the largest churches in Goa and a symbol of the powerful Portuguese presence. However, after the suppression of religious orders in 1835 by the Portuguese government, the church was abandoned. Over the years, time and weather caused much of the structure to collapse, but one impressive piece still stands: a 46-meter-high tower, which was once part of the church’s facade.
